Babbler- a dog that constantly gives tongue when no game scent is present.

Back Trailer- a dog that runs a track in the wrong direction.

Barks per minute- the number of barks counted during each minute of barking penn/tree.

Bawl mouth- the deep prolonged baying voice of certain hound breeds.

Baying- the voice of hunting hounds giving chase.

Bench- the table used to display dogs on in a (Bench) conformation show.

Bitch- a female dog.

Blanketback- a colour patern. A black marking covering the back that extends from neck to tail.

Bloodline- a dogs pedigree.

Breaking scent- the scent of unwanted game that is used to break dog from pursuing said game.

Brood bitch- a female used mainly for producing pups.

Broke dog- a dog that will not run trash game.

Cast-
(1) to turn a pack of dogs out to hunt (cast out).
(2) the act of dog searching for game (casting).
(3) a group of handlers and dogs participating in a competition hunt.

Catch dog- a dog that is used to catch game on the ground.

Cat foot- round, compact foot, with well arched toes, tightly bunched or close-cupped.

Changeover bark- a noticeable change in bark type, from trailing to penning/treeing.

Check in- a dog that will come back in if no game is found.

Chop bark, chop mouth- short fast barks.

Close hunter- a dog that hunts close while looking for a scent trail.

Cold nose- the ability to smell and accurately follow an old scent track or cold trail.

Crossbreed- a dog that is a mix of two different breeds.

Dam- mother.

Dew claws- an extra fifth digit on the inside of the leg.

Dog box/cage- a structure built on the back of a truck to transport dogs safely.

Feist- a dog type/breed similar to a terrier but used for above ground game.

Finished dog- a dog that is fully trained to hunt.

Grade dog- a dog that has no registration papers.

Hot nose- a dog that works fresh game tracks that were recently made.

Hound- a hunting dog type/breed that relies on smell to locate and bring game to bay.

Hunting cur- one of a dog type/breed that uses all its senses to locate and bring game to bay.

Lavway- the sound of a pack in full hot pursuit of its quarry (full cry).

Locate- a dog opens bark when game scent is found.

Nite hunt- a competition hunt held at night for nocturnal game.

Open trailer- refers to a dog that barks while following a scent trail.

Scratched- dogs that are removed from a competition hunt.

Semi silent trailer- a dog that does not bark much on track.

Silent trailer- a dog that runs a track without barking (giving voice).

Sire- father.

Strike- when the dog gives voice as soon as it smells a track.

Stud- male dog that is used in breeding.

Track- a scent trail left by a game animal.

Trash- unwanted game.

Treed- when the dog is at the tree with game in it and barking.

Wild hunter- a dog that will cast a great distance from the hunter in search of game without checking in.
